Day trip - How to get from Prague to Velka Amerika (Quarry Great America) by public transport
What: Velká Amerika is an abandoned limestone quarry near Mořina village in Czech Republic. There are also other quarries in the area, such as Lom Mexico. This place is a worth of visit! It is easy to make a day trip from Prague to this area.
How to get there by public transport: metro - bus - walking
First you need to reach Zličín metro station (the last stop at the yellow metro line, B). Once you come up from the platform, there is a bus station, which is located close to the shopping centre Metropole Zličín. There is also a few kiosks in the bus station, where you can buy snacks and baked goods.
Next, you need to buy a ticket for the bus. It is important to notice Prague public transport tickets are not eligible here. You can buy tickets from a ticket machine (card or cash) or from the driver by cash. It's more common and easier to buy a ticket directly from the driver.
The right bus to Velká Amerika is bus 311. It departs from the platform 8. It usually runs hourly. The bus ride takes about 40-50 minutes from Zličín metro station.

In the bus, there is a screen which shows the stops. They also announce the name of the current stop and the following stop, so it is easy to follow where you are at the moment. You need to get off the bus at a stop called ''Mořina, odb.lom''. The Google maps will show you a different stop (Mořina) to hop off, but the ''Mořina, odb.lom'' stop is closer to the quarry. The stop's name is literally saying ''lom'' (quarry). If you get off the bus at the Mořina stop, which Google maps recommends, you will have to walk over one kilometre to Velká Amerika.
When you get off at the Mořina, odb.lom stop, you will see a parking area to your left. Just walk past it and you will see a glimpse of the quarry. You cannot miss it!
Hox: It's important to realize that the quarry is a private-owned place. Therefore you are not allowed to walk down to the quarry and swim there. You can only watch it from above. You can get a fine if you break the rules.
There is sometimes a small ''kiosk'' selling ice cream and freshments. However, it's not always there, so it is a good idea to bring your own snacks and drinks. It is nice to have a picnic there. Just remember take your trash with you!
There are also other quarries in the area. However, they are not as popular and impressive as Velká Amerika. They are still worth of visit. They are called Lom Mexico and Lom Malá Amerika (Quarry Little America). These are easy to spot and get there. They are very close to the Velká Amerika - especially Lom Mexico. Google maps will help you to find these places.

How to get back to Prague: There is a bus stop on the other side of the street where you first landed. The buses do not go very often. If you miss this bus, you can walk to the ''Morina'' stop where buses go more often.
We highly recommend this place! It is an absolutely stunning hidden gem. It's a great day trip from Prague and it offers relax from the hectic Prague life. You can also reach this place by car or by hike from the Karlstejn Castle.
